About us

The International Armizare Society (IAS) is a martial arts confraternal association dedicated to the study, preservation, teaching and transmission of the Art of Arms (Armizare) in the tradition of Fiore dei Liberi. We seek high standards of academic and martial quality to create a transparent and ethical community of professional teachers, for the protection and transmission of Armizare; our tools are research, experimentation, training, education, sharing and personal responsibility.

Why choose us?

What we do

The IAS’s mission is to maintain and pass down canonical Armizare as recorded and left to posterity by the Founder, Fiore dei Liberi, and the successors within his tradition. In furtherance of this, the IAS also seeks the “preservation and promotion of Armizare as a complete, traditional, but living and functional martial art”.

Research

As a 600-year-old martial art, Armizare exists within a particular cultural milieu. The Society’s mission is not only the physical study of the tradition’s techniques, but fostering understanding of Italian history and martial culture at the birth of the Renaissance.

Support

Members gain access to hours of video and hundreds of pages of support materials, private discussion groups, video coaching and access to mentoring from both highly knowledgeable instructors and our academic and martial advisors.

Training

Martial arts are practical endeavors. The IAS fosters instruction to its members by providing a ready-made ranking structure and over-arching curriculum of rock-solid interpretations tested and refined over two and a half decades, as well as hosting Armizare Academy – an international training event for member schools and associates.

Certification

The IAS’s chief mission is transmission of Armizare to the next generation. To that end, the Society has formed a testing body and formal testing regimen for instructor certification, combining a pursuit of excellence in martial performance with best practices in modern education performance evaluation. This means our instructors can’t just do but can teach others to do.

Councils

The Charter of the International Armizare Society calls for a semi-democratic structure in which the Society is overseen by a Governing  Council working in concert with both Research and Martial  Advisors. The system is a representational democracy, in the sense that, as martial arts are inherently hierarchical to preserve technical quality, only magister-level candidates are generally eligible to serve on the Governing Council.

Governing Council

The IAS Governing Council is comprised of five Magistri d’Armizare, consisting of the three founding members, plus two additional members, elected from the membership. Elected members serve a term of two years. The Council sets policy, review requests for Affiliation and conducts examinations.

Note that in, order to move the organization forward, until such time as there are five Magistri d’Armizare available to form a full Governing Council, the IAS Charter calls for the Founding Members to act as a Governing Council Pro Tempore.

Martial Advisory Council

The chief purpose of the Advisory Council is to call upon the expertise of high level teachers of traditional martial arts to assist in the testing and establishment of the first generation of Magistri d’Armizare.
